Week 2 – The Beauty of Landscape Photography: A Sans Souci Photographer’s Journey

Introduction:

Landscape photography has captivated audiences for centuries. The natural world’s beauty and majesty have always been a subject of fascination for photographers. As a Sans Souci photographer, I am constantly inspired by the area’s stunning landscapes. Gallery below

Personal Project:

In this week of my 52-week photo project, I’ve been exploring the world of landscape photography and auto exposure. It’s been a challenging task as I typically shoot in manual mode, use my DSLR, a wide 13mm lens, a sturdy tripod, HDR, a polarizer, and an ND filter to achieve more professional landscape photos for large prints. Then, I spend hours editing in Lightroom and Photoshop.

However, today, most people shoot with their phones. So, I decided to experiment by shooting on my phone, using a long-exposure setting and a quick black and white filter. It has also been a rewarding experience that has forced me to think about my photography differently and to break from my usual daily patterns.

"Gazing out at the endless horizon, with the sun just starting to peek over the horizon, and the long shadow of the morning casting its eerie spell across the sand, the breakwater juts out into the bay providing a leading line that guides the eye to the endless possibilities of a new day. Captured at the break of dawn, this photo taken by a Sans Souci photographer captures the peaceful yet powerful moment that can only be found in the great outdoors."

Technique:

Auto exposure is a popular technique in landscape photography. It’s a camera setting that automatically adjusts the aperture, shutter speed, and ISO for proper image exposure. This feature is particularly useful for beginners who may not have a strong understanding of the technical aspects of photography. However, as one becomes more advanced in photography skills, it is essential to learn to shoot manually to have more control over the final image.

History:

The history of landscape photography is rich and diverse, with many masters of the craft who have left their mark on the world. Ansel Adams, one of the most famous landscape photographers of all time, was known for his iconic black and white images of the American West. His work was characterized by his masterful use of light and shadow and his ability to convey the grandeur and beauty of the natural world. Other notable landscape photographers include Edward Weston, known for his intimate and detailed images of nature, and Paul Strand, famous for his abstract and minimalist landscapes.

Motivation:

Why do we shoot landscapes? Why do we take photos at all? Photography is an art form that allows us to capture the beauty of the world around us and freeze a moment in time. Landscape photography, in particular, allows us to capture the essence of a place and evoke emotion in the viewer. It is a way to connect with the world and share our experiences with others.

“Landscape photography is the supreme test of the photographer – and often the supreme disappointment.”

– Ansel Adams, many times during his career between the 1920’s to 1980’s

Technology:

The advancement of photography technology has greatly impacted landscape photography. With the advent of digital cameras and editing software, it has become easier and more affordable for photographers to capture and edit high-quality images. This has led to a democratization of the medium, allowing more people than ever to create stunning landscape photographs.

“Technology is nothing. What’s important is that you have a faith in people, that they’re basically good and smart, and if you give them tools, they’ll do wonderful things with them.”

Steve Jobs

Conclusion:

I woke up early this morning and headed to the beach at Sans Souci to capture the sunrise over Botany Bay. I included this photo with my mobile phone in this post. I think it’s a great representation of the beauty of the area and the power of photography to capture a moment in time. As a Sans Souci photographer, I’m excited to share my work with the local community. I hope this weekly photography project will inspire others to see the world around them in a new way and take up photography themselves. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned pro, there’s always something new to learn and discover in photography.
