The Architectural Wonders of Sydney – 5/52 Week Photo Challenge
G’day there fellow photographers!
It’s Scott here, and welcome back to Maxyphoto’s 52-week photography challenge. This week, we’re exploring the fascinating world of architecture and bulb photography. So, whether you’re a professional photographer or just starting out, let’s get snapping and capturing the beauty of Sydney’s architectural wonders.

What is Architecture?
When you hear the word architecture, what comes to mind? Most of us will think of grand buildings and intricate designs, but architecture is much more than that. It is the art of designing and constructing buildings, software, hardware, and even brand architecture.
For photographers, architecture offers a unique opportunity to capture the character, history, and design of the built environment. Whether you’re drawn to the sleek lines of modern skyscrapers or the ornate details of historic buildings, architecture provides endless possibilities for capturing stunning images.
Finding the Right Shot
Before you start snapping away, it’s essential to consider the elements of architecture that make a great photo. Whether you’re photographing a building, bridge, or sculpture, think about its structure, function, and purpose.
Look for interesting angles, lines, and shapes that draw the viewer’s eye. Experiment with different lighting conditions, from the soft light of dawn to the dramatic shadows of sunset.
Bulb Mode
Bulb mode is a technique that allows you to keep the shutter open for as long as you want, creating stunning long-exposure images. This technique is particularly useful for capturing light trails, stars, and other low-light scenes.
To use bulb mode, you’ll need a camera with a manual mode, a tripod, and a remote shutter release. Set your camera to manual mode, select the bulb setting, and press the shutter release button to open the shutter. Keep the button pressed for the desired amount of time, and then release it to close the shutter.
A Community Landmark
For this week’s challenge, I recommend visiting a local landmark that has some architectural significance. This could be anything from a historical building to a modern sculpture or bridge.
One great example is the Sydney Harbour Bridge. This iconic structure has been an important part of Sydney’s skyline for nearly a century. Try taking photos from different angles and in different lighting conditions to capture its unique character.
The Maxyphoto SHINE Workshop
At Maxys, we’re always looking for new ways to inspire and educate creatives. Our SHINE Presenter workshop is a great example of how we apply the principles of architecture to our teaching and training programs.
Using the ADDIE model, we create a structured approach to workshop design, incorporating the key elements of architecture, such as structure, function, and purpose. By applying these principles to our workshops, we ensure that our students receive a comprehensive and effective learning experience.
